India Abstain from procedural votes taken at the UN Security Council (UNSC) to call a rare special emergency session of the UN General Assembly regarding Russian aggression against Ukraine, even when New Delhi welcomed Moscow and Kyiv’s decision to hold talks in Belarus borders.
This resolution was adopted with 11 votes support, opening the way for the General Assembly to meet in the crisis immediately after Monday night (Indian time) or Tuesday morning. India, China and UAE Abstain, while Russia voted on resolution.
This will only be 11 emergency sessions from the General Assembly since 1950.
The 15 Security Council of the Country met Monday morning to hold a vote at the Emergency Special Session of the 193 General Assembly regarding Russian invasion to Ukraine.
Voice calls for the UNGA session are procedural so none of the five permanent members of the Security Council-China, France, Russia, England and the US – can use their veto.
“It is very regrettable that the situation in Ukraine has deteriorated further since the last council was held on this issue,” India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Tirumuti, said in the sound explanation Monday.
Tiruahu underlines that “there are no other choices other than return to diplomacy and dialogue.” “We welcome today’s announcements by both sides to hold talks on the Belarus border,” he said.
